Washington, DC – September 5, 2020 – Through collaborative effort, the District of Columbia Housing Authority (DCHA) and Howard University College of Medicine have reached a fruitful agreement to bring effective health and COVID-19 test scans to the community. Senior citizens, disabled persons, and a few families have been earmarked to receive this privilege the hospital facility located in Ward 1. With help from the faculty, caregivers, and students from Howard University College of Medicine and health sciences schools, clinics will be set up withiin the community and outdoor spaces. The process is set to commence by October in Garfield Terrace Family and Senior, LeDroit Apartments, Kelly Miller, and Park Morton.

“The health and safety of our residents is of the utmost importance. This partnership is another way DCHA is working to eliminate barriers to healthcare, reduce health disparities, and make it easier for many of the District of Columbia’s most vulnerable residents to receive quality health services in their community,” said DCHA Executive Director Tyrone Garrett. “Many individuals have been unable to make preventive and primary health care visits while they stay home during the stay at home order, so DCHA is working to bring health care directly to our residents.”

The clinics will be partly funded by DCHA under the CARES Act. The aim of the clinics will be to offer face-to-face and virtual healthcare, screenings for general health, testing for Covid-19, and dissemination of vital medical information to communities where access is hindered. The partnership also hopes to establish a virtual health chronic disease management model at Garfield Terrace Senior and LeDroit Apartments for 20 residents that are struggling with chronic conditions.

“The Howard University College of Medicine is proud to partner with the District of Columbia Housing Authority on what will become Howard’s third coronavirus testing project in the local community,” said Dr. Hugh E. Mighty, dean. “This initiative is aligned with Howard’s strategic plan to serve our community where they live and enables us to leverage the tech and innovation expertise of the 1867 Health Innovations Project to deliver virtual health services. These efforts are consistent with our mission of truth and service, which has endured for more than 150 years.”

DCHA’s partnership with Howard University College of Medicine is the second of such health programs by the organization geared at improving the safety protocols that are being set up across DCHA’s portfolio.
