What’s the difference between FRP and KFRP?

In the past days, outdoor optical fiber cables often use FRP as the central reinforcement. Nowadays, there are some cables not only use FRP as the central reinforcement but also use KFRP as the central reinforcement.

FRP has the following characteristics:

(1) Lightweight and high-strength

Relative density is between 1.5~2.0, which means 1/4~1/5 of carbon steel, but the tensile strength is close to or even higher than that of carbon steel, and the specific strength can be compared with high-grade alloy steel. The tensile, flexural and compressive strengths of some epoxy FRP can reach more than 400Mpa.

(2) Good corrosion resistance

FRP is a good corrosion-resistant material, and has good resistance to atmosphere, water and general concentrations of acids, alkali, salt, and a variety of oils and solvents.

(3) Good electrical properties

FRP is an excellent insulating material, used to make insulators. It can still protect good dielectric properties under high frequency. It has good microwave permeability.

KFRP (polyester aramid yarn)

Aramid fiber reinforced fiber optic cable reinforcement core (KFRP) is a new type of high performance non-metallic fiber optic cable reinforcement core, which is widely used in access networks.

(1) Lightweight and high strength

Aramid fiber reinforced fiber optic cable reinforced core has low density and high strength, and its specific strength and specific modulus far exceed those of steel wire and glass fiber reinforced optical cable cores.

(2) Low expansion

The aramid fiber reinforced optical cable reinforced core has a lower linear expansion coefficient than the steel wire and glass fiber reinforced optical cable reinforced core in a wide temperature range.

(3) Impact resistance and fracture resistance

The aramid fiber reinforced fiber optic cable reinforced core not only has ultra-high tensile strength (≥1700MPa), but also impact resistance and fracture resistance, and can maintain a tensile strength of about 1300MPa even in the case of breaking.

(4) Good flexibility

Aramid fiber reinforced fiber optic cable reinforced core is light and easy to bend, and its minimum bending diameter is only 24 times the diameter. The indoor optical cable has a compact structure, beautiful appearance and excellent bending performance, which is especially suitable for wiring in complex indoor environments.
